The Art Fairs We Care About in 2023

A key part of our January and new year planning involves art fairs. For this, we consider what we did and did not attend in the previous year and assess whether we should attend going forward.  Art fairs have been changing a ton in recent years in several ways - some have gone out of business, merged, changed months, added new locations, etc. Given that, mapping it all out takes a minute, but we’re pleased to share the fairs that are important to our business in 2023. Our team intends to attend many of these and keep a close eye on those that we can’t to see which galleries are showing what, fair successes and pitfalls and more. Fairs that are not on our list are not unimportant and this is not intended to slight them, they are simply not the best fit for our clientele. 

With that, here’s the notated list: 

  • Intersect Palm Springs

    Boutique fair that attracts a subset of great galleries showing in Miami in Dec.

  • Felix Art Fair

    Funky emerging art held at the historic Hotel Roosevelt with galleries in hotel rooms.

    Los Angeles, CA

  • Spring Break Art Show

    Experimental art.

    Los Angeles, CA

  • Frieze Los Angeles

    A manageable range of quality Contemporary art.

    Los Angeles, CA

  • Outsider Art fair

    Interesting work at relatively lower price points. Work is by “outsider artists” who are self-taught or have minimal exposure to the conventional art market. This type of work may be done by people suffering mental illness or social exclusion.

  • The Photography Show by Aipad

    A broad selection of photography. This fair has changed ownership in recent years and the jury is still out on how the quality compares to its previous iteration.

  • Expo Chicago

    A solid large-scale fair with quality galleries and a range of emerging to established contemporary artists shown

  • Art Dallas

    An unexpectedly solid group of international galleries in a lower end venue with historically fantastic, collectible contemporary art.

  • Independent Art Fair

    This fair is hit or miss and in past years has been avant-guard heavy.

    Very new and showing emerging artists who usually don’t have gallery representation.

    A mid-sized fair with prints, photographs and sculptural works made of paper.

    A staple NY large-scale fair with mid to high end contemporary art.

  • Art Toronto

    A staple TO large-scale fair with mid to high end contemporary art.

  • Fine Art Print Fair

    Prints of all kinds with a range of pricing, scale and quality.
